eaopicIt has been a busy few months for SampoMedia, working on a number of major reports and organising and chairing events around the world.

The breadth of the activity – and some issues of confidentiality – has made it difficult to find time to share insights.

So over the next few weeks, we will be posting some of our observations, gleaned from research, interviews and interactive events

Among the key events have been:

Cinema 2020: A major conference in Amsterdam, which looked at the future of cinema in a rapidly evolving on-demand, always-on culture. SampoMedia’s Michael Gubbins and Peter Buckingham were both involved in the planning and chairing of the event. The official report is available as a download here.

Ticket To Ride:  European Audiovisual Observatory. A Cannes conference on the circulation of European film, chaired by Michael Gubbins. Panellists included the head of Amazon Studios film productions Ted Hope. It is now available to watch on YouTube

New Distribution and Marketing Models: A CNC event in Cannes, chaired by Gubbins with panellists including indie pioneer Ira Deutchman and Amazon Studios head of worldwide production Jason Ropell. A report of the event is available here from Cineuropa.

Diversity in film: A Cannes closed event, organised by Swedish film funders, which debated Gubbins’ report, Building Bridges, commissioned by CineRegio, Film i Vast, Vlaams Audiovisueel Fonds and Film Fonds Wien. It is available as a free download. The report has recently been the subject of seminars and discussions in Gothenburg, Berlin and Cannes.

Magnifier: A pioneering new approach to film development and production introduced by Ffilm Cymru Wales (of which Gubbins is chair). The Welsh agency has been working on new kinds of early-stage development, IP creation and collaborative working practices.

The Future Of Cinema: A keynote panel at CineEurope, chaired by Michael Gubbins, with a panel, including Dreamworks founder, Jeffrey Katzenberg. See Variety report here.

Netherlands EU Presidency conference – Gubbins chaired sessions at a major EU event in Amsterdam, looking at the different elements having an impact on the circulation of audiovisual media in Europe.

Seminars and events: Gubbins and Buckingham have led and chaired a number of other key events in recent months, including:

Meeting Point: Vilnius Film Festival

Build Your Audience: Film London

Find Your Audience: Irish Film Board

Young Audience Development: Europa Distribution, Karlovy Vary

Getting Millennials to cinemas: Europa Cinemas, Next, Cannes.

We are also working on a wide variety of other projects that, for now, need to remain confidential. But the number of countries we have worked in since we founded in 2013 has now passed 30.
